Chapter 45

The night nurse stopped at the door shortly after midnight. Rawle had dozed off.
“There’s a police officer to see you,” she said, addressing Kelloway. “Do you want me to tell her to come back in the morning?”
:”No,” Kelloway said, sitting up in her bed. “Send him in, Geri.”

Fiona had called the cops, something that didn’t even occur to Rawle, for some reason.
Cst. Emma Bearsto with Kentville town police entered the room in her dark blue uniform. Rawle vaguely recognized her from covering courts here and there over the past few years. She had testified at an attempted murder trial he covered last winter.
The constable bustled in and stood at the foot of the beige Stryker bed. Kelloway took her slowly through what happened and she made detailed notes seeming to focus on a precise timeline of everything she was doing around the time of the event. The cop told them all the platitudes they wanted to hear about how the culprit would be found and the nightmare would end.
She asked about recent conflicts Kelloway may have experienced, especially in the workplace.
“I work in a hospital,” Kelloway said. “I’m in conflict every day.”
